How to Play Subway Surfers
Subway Surfers is an endless runner where you dash along a three-lane railway, weaving left and right to dodge trains, jumping over barriers, and rolling under obstacles for as far as you can. Your character runs automatically and accelerates the longer you survive, so the challenge is not starting — it is reacting fast enough to stay alive as the speed climbs. A single crash into a train or barrier ends the run, and your distance plus the coins you collected become your final score.
Your score is driven by two things: how far you run and how many coins you grab. Coins appear in long ribbons stretching across all three lanes, and collecting a full line is worth far more than snagging one or two. Your score also scales with a multiplier that rises as your account level increases, so veteran players pull bigger numbers from the exact same distance. Coins are the currency you spend between runs to unlock new characters, hoverboards, and upgrades.
Five core power-ups appear on the tracks and reshape each run: the Coin Magnet pulls every nearby coin to you automatically, the Jetpack launches you above the trains to harvest a sky full of coins, Super Sneakers let you jump higher and clear taller obstacles, the 2x Multiplier doubles your score for a stretch, and the Hoverboard grants a one-time crash save. Knowing when to grab each one — and when to skip it to stay safe — is what separates a casual run from a personal best.
Controls
On desktop, press the Left and Right Arrow Keys to switch between the three lanes, press Up Arrow to jump over low obstacles, and press Down Arrow to roll under high barriers. Double-tap Up to deploy a Hoverboard if you have one equipped.
On mobile and touchscreen devices, swipe left or right to change lanes, swipe up to jump, swipe down to roll, and double-tap the screen to activate your Hoverboard. The swipe controls are responsive and designed for one-handed play.
Strategies
The single most important habit is staying in the center lane by default. The middle lane leaves you an escape route to either side the instant an obstacle appears, whereas hugging the left or right lane means half your options are gone before you even see the threat. When two obstacles stack across two lanes, you want the one open lane — and you can only guarantee that option exists if you start from the middle.
Treat the Hoverboard as insurance, not a toy. A board gives you a free crash save for about 30 seconds, so deploy one right before a section you know is packed with trains, or once the speed has climbed past your comfort zone — not on calm stretches where you do not need the protection. Since you carry a limited number per run, spending them on the hardest moments stretches their value furthest.
Grab the Coin Magnet the moment it appears, even if it takes a small detour. While the magnet is active, every coin in your vicinity flows to you automatically, which lets you focus entirely on dodging trains instead of threading between coin ribbons — that single power-up often doubles a run's coin total. The Jetpack is even better for raw income: take it the instant it shows up, because the sky section rains coins and is completely safe. Multiply those coin ribbons by your score multiplier, and one good power-up run can outscore ten ordinary ones.
Tips and Tricks
Use power-ups like the magnet to collect more coins.
Hoverboards give you a second chance if you crash.
